Here’s a properly weird one from Craftwork in Oamaru. A mix of their Good Lord Tripel and a full 50 percent sweet Waitaki Gewürztraminer, with locally grown fresh hops. The nose is quite incredible. Sharp and sweetly perfumed just like a dessert wine, with a funky tang that’s reminiscent of farmhouse cider. The beer component doesn’t really make an appearance until the palate, which is initially sharp and juicy before winding back to show off the more stayed Tripel flavours. The sweetness and acid both work to hide the whopping 11 per cent ABV with an almost sinister effectiveness, so beware!
