Sprig & Fern
Nelson-based Sprig & Fern brewery was started by master brewer Tracy Banner and her husband Ken in 2009.
Tracy learned the brewing trade in England and when she emigrated to New Zealand she worked for Lion in Auckland and then at Mac’s when the Lion-owned brand was still brewing in Nelson. She then became the first female head brewer and brewery manager at Speight’s in Dunedin. It’s no surprise she’s described as the “mother of New Zealand brewing”.
Sprig + Fern has grown from a brewery and single tavern in Nelson to a string of taverns around the city as well as in Christchurch and Wellington.
The brewery is renowned for its approachable styles, ideally suited to being consumed in a cozy tavern. Their Doppelbock, The GOAT, and Scotch Ale are two of their most awarded beers.
