We’ve asked the Pursuit of Hoppiness writers to come up with their top picks for the beers of the year. Between us the aim is to have exactly 100 beers.

TOP PICK: Altitude Jam Session Volume 13: Strawberry & Sea Buckthorn

In my humble opinion, it doesn’t get better than Altitude’s Jam Sessions. They hit … Every. Single. Time. I’m a sucker for Altitude – they’re my local watering hole and always delighting my tastebuds. Bursting with strawberry and the unique flavour of sea buckthorn (think tart and sour), this beer has a thick smoothie consistency.

One Drop x Altitude Extra Dose Cinnamon Roll Golden Pastry Stout

One word: decadent. Rich, velvety and sweet. Basically dessert in a pint glass – it features caramel and biscuit malts, vanilla beans, toasted cinnamon sticks, marshmallows and a hint of cold-brewed coffee.

Eddyline Crank Yanker West Coast IPA

Bold, fresh and crisp. A balanced brew and makes for easy drinking. The aromas will get your tastebuds tingling — citrusy and sweet with a hint of pine. Great if you enjoy a slightly more bitter IPA, but the finishing note will leave a bit of sweetness in your mouth, too.

Parrotdog Cold IPA

Described as a very pale lager/West Coast IPA hybrid, this beer is refreshing and crisp. I’m on the Cold IPA train and this is one of my favourites. Citrus and grapefruit come through and the beer is a touch on the bitter side.

Eruption Brewing Lyttleton Pale Ale

Clean and easy-drinking, it’s great on a sunny day. Sometimes, you don’t want crazy flavours and complicated beer — a simple pale ale will do — and this one is perfectly well-rounded.

Heyday Beer Co. Pacific Gose Sour

An absolute banger of a beer. Fruity, zesty and crisp, it’s sour but has a dash of coriander and salt to balance it all out. Floral notes also come through alongside the citrus. Heyday describe it as a sparkling, tart German-style ale with a bold Pacific twist, and they’ve certainly achieved that.

Garage Project Pernicious Weed

A classic oldie, but still so, so good. This one recently found its way back into my beer rotation after a wee while and I forgot just how juicy and hoppy it is. Bitey, bitter and bold.

Duncan’s Oat Cream Hazy IPA

If you’re looking for smooth, easy drinking, look no further. I’m such a fan of Duncan’s beers – they’re always bold and fun, and the Oat Cream Hazies are no exception. Thick, creamy, and juicy.

Emerson’s Loud & Clear Bright DIPA

This beer packs a punch! Beautiful clarity and perfectly balanced, Emerson’s have hit the nail on the head. It’s refreshing, juicy and as hoppy as you’d expect. Sitting at 8.4%, although you wouldn’t know while sipping, but just keep this in mind when you’re enjoying.

Bach Brew Moo Joo Hazy IPA

This milkshake hazy delivers the goods. Thick, creamy and full of bold fruit flavours – you’ll be tasting mango, pineapple and passionfruit. The hops fit in perfectly here, too, with Nectaron, Superdelic, Simcoe and Azacca. It doesn’t get much more fun than this.
