Motueka-based Hop Federation will cease brewing next month following a strategic review by owners Kono NZ LP.
Kono general manager Marina Hirst Tristram says the decision wasn’t easy and reflects a deliberate focus across the commercial businesses of Kono.
“As part of a broad strategic review aligned with Kono NZ’s five-year plan, the decision has been made to close Hop Federation Brewery and cease brewing operations,” Hirst Tristram told Pursuit of Hoppiness.
“Hop Federation has always been about great beer, great people, and being part of something local and meaningful.
“This decision doesn’t reflect the mahi of our team or the quality of our beer — it’s about ensuring our businesses are values-aligned, positive financial contributors and have future-focused viability.”
Hop Federation was started by Simon and Nicki Nicholas in 2013. It was bought by Kono, the Nelson-based Māori food and beverage business in 2020. Hope Federation employs five people.

Hirst Tristram said given the challenges of the brewing industry as well as the wider hospitality and retail sectors, Hop Federation was not performing to the financial level required of the business.
“This decision not a reflection of the Hop Federation team — their passion, skill, and commitment to quality have been deeply valued. We are proud of their contribution to the brand and the wider craft beer industry.
“Like many in the craft beer, hospitality and retail sectors, Hop Federation has navigated a changing landscape over the past few years — from rising costs to evolving consumer habits. These shifts feed into a continuous review of Kono businesses focused on long-term sustainability.
“The decision to close follows a consultation process with affected kaimahi [employees], and the business is working closely with them to support them through the transition.
“While it’s sad to say goodbye, we’re proud of the team and what they’ve created — really great hop-forward beer.”
Hop Federation picked up four gold medals at the recent NZ Beer Awards for their Pilsner, Lager, Hazy IPA and NZH-109 Hazy IPA.

Hop Federation will continue brewing for the coming weeks and it’s expected beer will be available in both kegs and cans until 2026.
Hirst Tristram said Kono chose to close the business as a fast sale was unlikely in the current economic climate and they didn’t want to leave the brewing and operations team in limbo.
They are open to options for others leasing or purchasing the plant/brewery in Motueka or selling the brand and assets.
