I think there’s very few fresh takes to make on any beer with ‘Steinlager’ in the name, but it’s interesting to see it here in the New World Beer & Cider Awards Top 30 nonetheless (and for the second year running). The Pure variant is a fruitier, less bitter, reformulation of the original lager titan that I’ve always thought rather dilutes what made old Steinlager so unique, but, I can’t deny it isn’t good beer, and neither have the other judges. Softly tropical and herbaceous with a gently sweet malty drizzle and low bitterness, Pure may not be out to challenge any drinker’s palates, but as a balanced, easy-drinking lager it succeeds masterfully.
