A light golden ale from Wanaka’s Rhyme X Reason, this is rested on French oak to give it an extra dimension. It’s gentle and malty on the nose with lots of fresh oak and toasty chardonnay aroma. The palate is similarly malty and gentle up front, but intensifies as the oak flavours develop. Smooth oak tannin and vanilla pod hover over the mild bitterness into the long and gradually drying finish. A serious amount of flavour for such a moderate drop, and a fascinating look at the effect oak conditioning has on a mild beer, rather than the typical 10% ABV whoppers that usually get the job.
