It seems like 2022 is the year that weissbier really got a shot in the arm and started coming out bigger and better than before. Between Emerson’s best in show at the New World Beer & Cider Awards to Badass Beverages trophy winning Hefe Metal at the New Zealand Beer Awards, there’s been a wealth of great releases to choose from. I can add one more to that list with Bishop’s Kick, a seasonal release (just in time for Oktoberfest!) from the masters of the traditional German styles, Zeelandt Brewery. There’s classic clove and banana with gentle apricot and an exceptional fresh wheat and yeast character, evocative of freshly stretched dough. The light bottle conditioning really rouses those yeast-driven flavours, making this taste not just fresh but truly alive, while the traditionally low bitterness leaves the finish open for the ethereal fruity esters. Refreshing and satisfying in equal measure, you could just as easily enjoy this by the glass or by the stein (put me down for the stein though, just FYI).
